Here is summary of the Hearing aid funding options in NZ:

  • didability support services

In New Zealand, the Disability Support Service (DSS) has two schemes1 designed to assist permanent residents getting hearing aids. Depending on your circumstances and your type of hearing loss, you may qualify for the DSS Hearing Aid Funding Scheme or the DSS Hearing Aid Subsidy Scheme.

The DSS Hearing Aid Subsidy Scheme provides $511.11 (including GST) per hearing aid to adults who:

    • Are over the age of 16

    • Have a permanent hearing loss and need a hearing aid

    • Are NZ residents who ordinarily live in NZ and are not covered under the Hearing Aid Funding Scheme

  • acc

We are here to help eligible clients through the ACC funding process.

You may be eligible for funded hearing aids through the Accident Compensation Corporation if your hearing loss is a result of workplace noise exposure or attributed to an accident.

ACC offers different levels of funding for hearing aids depending on the cause and extent of your hearing loss. The amount funded will depend on how much of your hearing loss is attributable to noise exposure that occurred during your employment or hearing loss due to trauma. Central Audiology can assist with applying for ACC funding and fitting your hearing aids if your ACC claim is accepted.

If your claim is accepted, ACC contributes financial support towards the purchase of hearing aids, appointments, batteries, repairs & maintenance. ACC funding support for new hearing aids is available once every six years for eligible clients.

  • veterans affairs

If your hearing was damaged or you developed tinnitus while serving in the New Zealand Defence Forces you may be eligible for hearing aids and devices.

Eligibility depends on several factors, including whether you receive a war pension and the degree of disability.

If your claim is accepted, Veterans’ Affairs will pay for an assessment, for your hearing devices and all your follow-up appointments, and for any servicing and repairs that are needed.

  • work-and-income

If the cost of hearing aids is unmanageable, a person can apply to Work and Income NZ for a loan to help buy hearing aids. Loan repayments are usually deducted from future benefit payments.

  • southern-cross-health-insurance

Southern Cross Health Society may contribute to the cost of your appointments, depending on your policy. Hearing aids are not covered by your medical aid scheme. You can find more information on the Easy Claim scheme on their website.
